Stanton Glantz
Anyone who's been in this fight knows about Stanton Glantz.
He's THE person who says that there is NO HARM TO BUSINESSES from smoking bans!  In fact, he claims it's Big Tobacco who says the Hospitality Industry is hurting.

He actually put in WRITING what Tobacco Control did to Ohio, how they bullied the Legislature into not enacting their own ban by threatening them with "it's an election year..we can make it hard on you..whose side are you on?  Doctors and the ACS or Big Tobacco?"  How about being on the side of those who put everything on the line to open a business in this state?  Read his historic take on Ohio's Smoking Ban.

He recently put out this paper bemoaning his being compared to a Nazi.

Read it here.

The American Journal of Public Health published a Landman and Glantz paper in its Spring, 2009 edition in which this paper continues to perpetrate the fallacy that it's Big Tobacco who is claiming smoking bans economically harm the hospitality industry.  It is the HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY who is complaining that the bans are harming them.

According to a co-author of a previous paper with Glantz, the LA Times reported: "Glantz was on a backpacking trip and unavailable for comment. But his co-author Smith said that their study had been peer-reviewed, as had the earlier one. She stressed that “it’s based on sales tax figures–the best known source of objective information on the effects of smoking restrictions on restaurant revenues.” (bold added)

You do not need to be a scientist to know that there are other economic indicators than just sales taxes.  Anyone knows when a business starts to lose money, the first thing they do, before layoffs, is raise prices which raises sales taxes.  So I set off to look into Ohio and we found that since the beginning of the ban January 1, 2007, Ohio's liquor permit holders lost money from day one.  The first year, 313 "drinking places" closed (ceased paying sales taxes).  I have documented thoroughly these losses and their sources.

On January 23, 2009, I submitted a letter electronically to the AJPH with thorough documentation identifying all my sources.  My letter, and documentation, were apparently rejected on February 10, 2009 by AJPH which states it neither needs to state why nor do they need to notify the author.  On March 3, 2009, I submitted a letter to the editor  for publication which was rejected March 4, 2009 citing "The potential to advance public health research, policy, proactive, and education is our foremost consideration".  Translation: we don't want the truth-we have an agenda.

On April 16, 2009, I submitted comments to PLoS Medicine to be published regarding funding bias and the fact Stanton Glantz does not disclose competing interests.

When I am notified of the outcome of my letter, I will update the readers.

UPDATE:

PLoS Medicine (Public Library of Science) posted my comments regarding Professor Glantz's refusal to supply his competing interests.  Click on "Competing Interests of Glantz Must be Declared" to read them.  My comments (along with proof) were posted April 29, 2009.  IF Glantz rebutts, I'll let you know.  But what can he say?  The proof is there.

As a side note, PLoS Medicine editorial staff were a pleasure to work with.
